Windmills, such as these near Sutherland, Iowa, are one of the emerging options in the search for alternative sources of energy. With the capacity to generate 9,149 megawatts of electricity at the end of 2005, wind energy will reach about 2.3 million households in the United States in 2006. According to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, this will prevent 15 million tons of carbon dioxide from entering the air.
