Navajo medicine man John Holiday was instrumental in repatriating three ceremonial shields made for protection ceremonies a few centuries ago. The shields were hidden in the mountains of Utah when Kit Carson was raiding Navajo country in 1863. They were found by a rancher in the early 1900s and while several tribes claimed them as property, only Holiday was able to produce enough information to link them to the Navajo
