New Recycling Center
Add to Lightbox Download042010 Brian Leddy.Cpt. Steve Silversmith receives a jolt of 50,000 volts during stun-gun training Tuesday afternoon. All of Gallup McKinley Adult Detention Center's transport officers, Sergeants, Lieutenants and the Jail Captain will begin carrying stun guns for safety and enforcement within the next few weeks. In order to carry the county-owned Stinger Systems S-200 stun gun, officers must first undergo 16 hours of training, which culminates with a first-hand experience of its immobilization power — a four second blast from the stun gun. The high-voltage shock will completely immobilize a grown man. The relatively low amperage (about 3 and 1/2 amps) prevents permanent damage to the nervous system. The stun guns being issued to jail staff also are equipped with audio and video recording equipment, which begins recording when the stun gun is discharged, according to Stinger Director of Training Denny Kaufman.
